Here at foodmixitup we have reviewed a lot of expensive stand mixers that have wowed us with their technological ability and sheer range of functions but if there is one thing we simply adore it is the budget mixers, that offer tonnes of ability, for very little money. Happily, we can confirm that the VonShef fits into this category, with plenty of mixing power and a sheek design for an extremely small amount of money.
Firstly, the 1200W motor that powers this machine is certainly not common amongst the other budget stand mixer machines. For example, the Breville SHM2 is available for around the same price and yet is powered by a much smaller 380W motor. There are plenty of mixers that are going for a similar price that offer as little as 700W of power, which means that this really is a great deal. Now, it is true that such power is not required for most everyday mixing tasks, but believe me when I say that it is nice to know that you have the ability to step up your game a notch, when feeding the extended family or large groups of people. We ran the VonShef for 20 minutes on a tough dough cycle and it showed absolutely no signs of fatigue.
A great feature of this machine is its ability to alter the mixing speed, which is very important because you want to be able to perform a range of jobs, depending upon what you are making. Furthermore, you usually want to start on a low setting and then up the speed once you mix has changed consistency a little, in order to avoid all of the ingredients jumping out of the bowl. We found the ability of this product to move between the various speed settings more than adequate and had absolutely no trouble performing a bunch of everyday mixing tasks. As an added bonus, there is also an additional pulse settings, which allows for intermittent mixing.
The very large 5.5 litre Stainless Steel bowl offers more than enough capacity when it comes to creating large batches, offering a capacity of 2kg or 5 litres. Plus, for those who don’t particularly enjoy washing things by hand, the good news is that you can simply pop it straight into your dishwasher and avoid doing the dirty work yourself. Also included with this package is a handy splash guard, which will ensure your mix doesn’t end up all over you while you are operating this machine. One thing we are always sure to test, whenever we get our hands on a new food mixer, is its ability to stay still while it is running and fortunately, due to the strong rubber feet attached to the bottom, we are pleased to announce that this machine doesn’t move at all while in use.
The dough hook takes the hard work out of kneading bread by hand, which is a tough, physical task that requires a lot of exertion. The attachment is easy to clip on to the VonShef and you’ll be amazed by the amount of power that this little machine can put into preparing delicious breads for your whole family. Plus, when the time comes to whip up some cream, the balloon whisk utilises that same power to take the hard work out of your mixing jobs. It is worth noting that we did notice that the mix was not completely satisfactory when we mixed a couple of egg whites (a very small mix) but this was overcome by running it for a little longer than usual.
Noise is usually a factor that is important to people when considering an electronic appliance for the home so we thought we would mention what we thought about the decibels produced by the VonShef Although it could certainly not be described as silent, and does indeed let you know that it is running and powerful when in use, we found it to be on par with other mixers in this price bracket and it really wasn’t much of an issue.
The modern kitchen is now a focal point in the home and most people take great care when it comes to decoration and appearance. Therefore, it is important to fill our kitchens with appliances that not only perform well, they also look attractive. The sleek and stylish appearance of the VonShef stand mixer means that it will look great in any kitchen, no matter what your style or personal taste may be. A bold, yet neutral design and colour scheme means that it won’t clash with what you already have going on.
